A new Richard Phillips art exhibition takes place at the White Cube Gallery from 9th December 2005 to 14th January 2006, showcasing a group of seven large-scale oil paintings. Over the last decade, Phillips has developed a striking signature style that derives its tension from a select use of lurid popular images. He has designed an octagonal, chapel-like enclosure for this particular group of paintings and titled it, provocatively, Michael Fried. This project takes its name from an American critic who explored the relationship between art criticism and art history in the 1960s. In his latest project Richard Phillips further challenges the relationship between art and criticism, with a compelling group of provocative works. The three portraits are accompanied by four reworked graphic images, including a pencil sketch, bleeding heart and an Anime style cartoon girl.
