The Andrew Mummery Gallery presents the third exhibition of the painter Merlin James from 23 March to 22 April 2006. James' new solo show is devoted to highly illusionistic paintings of the sea. These paintings resume a tradition of sea painting that can be traced back through the pre-Impressionists, Courbet, early photographers such as Gustave Le Gray, and often disregarded genre of 'marine painting'. Merlin James has annotateed: "Most of the artists I am interested in have painted the sea: Courbet, Delacroix, Hartley, Nicholson, Lowry, Yeats, Hélion. But the origin of these paintings of mine is also on various beaches where I have walked in recent years". Merlin James was born in Cardiff in 1960 and studied at the Central School of Art, London and at the Royal College of Art, London. And now he lives and works in Glasgow.
